You are about to send your little boy to school, and it is pouring rain. How do you handle the situation? Do you let him go skipping out the door without any rain gear? Or do you pile on so many layers of protective clothing that he can hardly move? Of course, you do neither. You give him just what is needed to keep him dry. In a similar way, parents must find a balanced way to protect their family from the destructive influences that rain down on them from many sources—the entertainment industry, the media, peers, family relatives & friends, neighbors and at times even the schools.
Some parents and educators do little or nothing to shield their children from Child Sexual Abuse. There is great need to raise our voices against this scourge affecting many of these young ones around us and there is no easy way to address this issue. Children should be the center of our thoughts because they deserve happy, healthy childhoods for them to fulfill their potentials.
Children should be protected from sexual exploitation (being taken advantage of) and sexual abuse, including by people forcing children to have sex for money, or making sexual pictures or films of them.
In tackling Child Sexual Abuse, all responsible adults around children should act as their defense agents and take it upon themselves as their duty to look out for them.
The primary agent are the Parents. Many parents know how to be good parents but there is a high chance that even as a good parent you can miss the signs of child abuse on your child. Parents should ask the right and important questions, constantly offer emotional and mental support, and develop better and friendlier relationship as well as stronger bonds with their children so that they could be aware of unusual developments in their child’s life. It is very important that parents are cautious of who they leave their children with, where they are taken to and what activities they are involved in. The truth is, parents must always question, at the right time, under the right circumstances to identify the signs of child sexual abuse. Paying great care and attention to every aspect of the lives of their children goes a long way in protecting and shielding them from perpetrators and pedophiles. Also, parents can work with other parents and discuss effective methods to talk with children about child sexual abuse and children’s personal and sexual safety and ask other parents how they check in on their children’s safety.
Another agent is the Teacher. Children spend significant portions of their lives within the school environment, with school even being pegged as their second home. As a result, teachers can often be the last line of defense for children who are experiencing abuse at home or within the school environment. Teachers both in the public and private sectors should be supported with the necessities they would need to continue doing their jobs in an efficient and empathetic manner. schools are not entirely safe environments as many sexual predators have found homes within classrooms. Therefore, it is important for teachers committed to their students to trust their intuition and report any suspicious instances they may notice between their fellow teachers and students.
Members of the Community play an important role instrument in ensuring the safety and well-being of children in the society. They can be watch-guards for the children around them and help professionals to identify local risks. Influential community members could use their voice and respect to create awareness and educate children and families in the community about Child sexual abuse and assist victims to get help. As a neighbor, you should trust your guts if you feel that a babysitter or a family relative asked to watch a child in your neighborhood is abusing that child. This might sometimes be the only way a child could be rescued from a perpetrator.
Social groups like dance clubs, sports club, book clubs, etc. should ensure every member have access to, understand and follow clear, step-by-step procedures for dealing with questions, suspicious situations, and reports of abuse, as well as guidelines about professional boundaries and physical contact. The safety of children and teens should be your organization’s highest priority because you play a vital role in promoting child well-being, youth connectedness, and resilience. Parents and children should be able to ask questions and share concerns about child protection and safety. Staff must be trained in preventing, recognizing and responding to child sexual abuse. Social groups should adopt an important strategy to increase monitoring of adult-child interactions is to enhance the safety of children.
Organizations with the mission to engage adults in the prevention of child sexual abuse to reduce the incidence of child sexual abuse nationally and internationally through education and public awareness and provision of information to recognize and react responsibly to charge sexual abuse, should continue the good work in rescuing children from sexual abuse, educating communities, families, and children about child sexual abuse prevention.
More individuals should be interested in volunteering to join Child sexual abuse awareness and Prevention programs so that more children around us could be protected from the evils of perpetrators and reduce the number of victims and eventually end Child sexual abuse. More adults should act as deterrents and join groups that raise awareness about the criminal nature of child abuse and defilement, and encourage children, caregivers and community leaders to report sexual abuse cases, and identify and address instances of child abuse in their communities so as to reduce incidence of abuse.
Sexual abuse is such a wide-reaching issue that it requires the help of everyone to appropriately address it. Through working in collaboration with parents, teachers, community members, and other service providers, everyone has a role to play in protecting and defending children, they are the elements of our future communities and world in general and we can create an atmosphere that is safe for children to openly discuss sexual abuse and protect them from perpetrators. As regards Child Sexual Abuse, we all should be advocates.
